Casper Widdell has revealed he was ready to join Rangers but a transfer was blocked due to a defender not leaving Ibrox.
The Excelsior defender was linked with a move to Glasgow in the summer but ended up staying in the Netherlands.
Speaking to Helsingborgs Dagblad Widdell explained he had talks with Rangers but the position was such that Rangers would not add a new defender until one left.
"I had some good conversations with them," said the defender. "Then they changed managers, but their interest remained just as strong.
"However, there was a directive from higher up in the club stating they couldn't sign another defender until someone else left."
Further explaining the situation over a possible move to Ibrox, he added: "It looked like one player was going to leave.
"He wasn't in the matchday squad—and still isn't. They offered him loan moves and the like, but he refused to leave and still refuses. In the end, nothing came of it."
Widdell had further transfer interest in the summer but admitted he had his mind set on either joining Rangers or staying at Excelsior.
"I didn't have the same gut feeling about them," he said. "Towards the end of the transfer window, I was pretty much set on either joining Rangers or staying for another year to see what happened in the winter or the following summer."
