‘I was fair game!’ Charlotte Church addresses Chris Moyles’ grim offer to take her virginity aged 16

Charlotte Church has spoken out about Chris Moyles’ offer to take her virginity when she was just 16.

In a preview of Kathy Burke’s latest Channel 4 documentary, Kathy Burke: Growing Up, the 58-year-old comedian is seen interviewing the 37-year-old singer about being famous as a teenager.

A clip was shown in which Moyles, then-28, said to Church, “you were gonna be 16 and I offered to take your virginity".

The Welsh star reacted by telling Burke, “There was this shift where I became fair game.

“Of course, it wasn’t good. At least it was out in the open.

“That lads lads culture was prominent, it was very simplistic, it was unashamed and it was just out there.

“Whereas now, it’s somehow become a bit more underground and a bit more dangerous."

At the time, following complaints about Moyles’s 2002 comments, the Broadcasting Standards Commission said the DJ’s “explicit sexual content and humour had exceeded acceptable boundaries for the time of transmission”.

Church, who had found fame as a young child, previously explained how difficult it was growing up under the spotlight.

She told Life Stories host Kate Garraway: “All of the normal ways in which we grow and how puberty happens and how girls become women, was stifled and such.

“I felt I had to be this other eternally young, innocent, you know, little girl and that’s not where literally biological life was taking me.”

She continued: “You’ve got to remember and put me in my context, which is like an impressionable young girl and who’s trying to fit in.

“So no, there was definitely no conscious rebellion. The only thing I rebelled against was celebrity.

The mother-of-three, added: “My rebellion was: I will be normal.”

Celebrities including Jennifer Saunders, Bill Bailey, Charlotte and TikTok sensation Francis Bourgeois feature in Burke’s upcoming special.

Evening Standard has contacted Moyles’s representatives for comment.
