I visited the Liverpool cafe Sophie Ellis-Bextor says serves 'the best coffee'

Liverpool’s Eurovision celebrations brought many positives to the city- and Sophie Ellis-Bextor paying a visit was definitely one of them.

The singer hosted an iconic daytime disco in the kitchen department of John Lewis in Liverpool ONE before taking EuroVillage by storm on the eve of the Grand Final. She also took the time while here to visit one of the city’s most popular coffee shops.

Lucy In The Sky was placed in TripAdvisor's top 10% of restaurants worldwide last year, so it’s no wonder that Sophie was aware of its stellar reputation. Given my appreciation for the music of Sophie and The Beatles, this venue seemed like the perfect place to try out. In an Instagram post with Sophie, the shop's owners said they were “absolutely star struck” after the singer said she had provided the best coffee in Liverpool.

Its location at Imperial Court, nestled between Dale Street and Exchange Flags, can make it easy to miss. That’s quickly forgotten about once you step inside.

The light pink walls, decorated with references to The Fab Four, make it a truly lovely place to be. The only music on the soundtrack is from the band too, from Love Me Do in their early years to Let It Be from their final album.

There’s a great selection of breakfast and brunch options on the menu. I opted for Lucy’s Club Sandwich. This is a twist on the normal chicken club sandwich, with egg and in-house mayo added alongside a side of crisps and coleslaw.

Drinks wise, I felt obliged to give the espresso a go given Sophie’s praise. But what really caught my eye was the ‘Scouse Shake’ - a milkshake topped with whipped cream and marshmallows and served in a purple wheelie bin.

I’ve never been an admirer of coffee’s taste, but the espresso did energise me and was served with a tasty chocolate bourbon biscuit. The Scouse Shake definitely pleased me more though. Having a popular drink out of a well known Liverpool feature gave it a delicious blend of novelty and familiarity.

My choice of food was vindicated too. The delicious ingredients were tightly packed into three slices of thick toast. The coleslaw and crisps were an excellent addition too, although I had to give up on adding them to the already enormous butty.

The only complaint, if you can call it that, was how large the food serving was, as I failed to finish off the coleslaw and the crisps. But in terms of filling me up for dinner, it did the trick.

If you fancy a filling meal and are a fan of The Beatles, Lucy In The Sky is the perfect place to go. On top of that, it comes with a big recommendation from an iconic singer.
