After opening last summer in Liverpool ONE, there's been a lot of hype around American restaurant Slim Chickens, so I wanted to try it out myself.
I'm personally a huge fan of anything that involves fried chicken, and as a die hard KFC fan, I wanted to see if the trip to Slim Chickens was really worth it. As this was my first time visiting, I wasn't entirely sure what to expect, but I've definitely got mixed opinions.
As soon as I walked in, the general interior of the restaurant impressed me. It was sort of like a posh KFC, with new and modern furniture and a very 'clean' aesthetic as a whole. The restaurant itself was relatively quiet, but it was late afternoon on a weekday, so I can imagine that it's a lot busier on weekends.

In terms of the menu, although there was a lot on offer, it wasn't overwhelming in the slightest. I was torn between choosing the chicken tenders or the chicken sandwich, but opted for the chicken tenders in the end as they seemed like quite a popular dish.
The menu includes options like breaded chicken wings, chicken sandwiches, fresh wraps, salads, as well as plant based and bundle options. Overall, I was impressed with the options, but it was the buttermilk chicken tenders that I had my eye on.
One thing that did shock me at first was the price of the chicken tenders. Four chicken tenders as a meal came to a whopping £9.45 with a diet coke, and the large fries were £1 extra.
Now, if you compare that to McDonald's, the price for five chicken selects with large fries and a drink comes to £7.99, so there's a slight difference in price, and you get more. Of course, that's all well and good, but what about the quality of the chicken tenders from Slim Chickens?
The food
When the chicken tenders arrived, i immediately understood why they were priced as they were. I actually ended up waiting a good while for my food, which bothered me at first, but they were piping hot and fresh. when they arrived.
The chicken tenders were really high quality, and had a lot more flavour as opposed to something like a McDonald's. They didn't have as much seasoning as a KFC or Nando's in my opinion, but they had a really fresh, buttery taste which I loved.
As previously mentioned, the tenders were hot on arrival which made a real difference. It was clear that they'd been cooked from scratch, and the portion of fries was absolutely huge too.
I also got what looked like a small piece of fried bread on the side, which was a nice little addition. I'd say for the price, the food was definitely better in terms of quality than other fast food joints.
The fries weren't anything special in terms of taste, but they had a nice crunch and you got a whole lot of them. I liked the extra additions of the sauces, which vary between honey mustard, blue cheese, buffalo and more.
The verdict
I'd definitely visit Slim Chickens again, despite it being quite expensive, I do think the quality was worth it. My only criticism would be, in terms of 'fast food', my order took slightly longer than normal to get to me.
However, if it means my food is going to be hot and fresh, I absolutely understand. I loved the vast range of foods on the menu and definitely want to try one of their famous chicken sandwiches next.
