'I visited one of the of the last remaining Wimpy restaurants in Scotland and it was joyous'

It's the red and white logo that is sure to be a heady hit of nostalgia for any Scot of a certain age and when Scots social media star Dazza spotted it recently in Fraserburgh he knew he had to eat there. One of only three Wimpys left in the country (alongside Kilmarnock and Dingwall), he was delighted for the chance to relive his childhood.

Posting the photos of his visit on his official Facebook stage, Dazza, real named Darren Dowling, explained to the Daily Record that it was a "joyous return to his childhood".

He said: "I was up in Fraserburgh filming some stuff and on our off time, we realised purely by chance that Fraserburgh has one of the only Wimpys still left in Scotland. We already had lunch planned somewhere else, but as soon as I knew it was there - I stopped what I was doing and made the journey.

"When we got there, everything came flooding back. The smells, the decor, the bolted-down seats - it was all the same from when I was a kid, it was wild.

"It was honestly like walking back in time. All the seats are the same, the pictures look the same and the place even felt like it had been wallpapered and they've not changed it since it opened."

Wanting to play it safe when it came time to order, the internet star, who is best known for his hit show 'Does It Fry?' and starring role on Come Dine With Me, decided on a cheeseburger and added a slice of bacon.

He explained: "It wasn't the best burger I've ever had, but honestly - they could have served me a slice of lettuce and I would have still loved the experience.

"I didn't even need the toilet, but I made a visit anyway and they've even somehow managed to capture the smells of a 2002 toilet. It's bonkers. It sounds like I'm ripping into the place, but I promise you I'm not, it was a joyous occasion. It was a bit on the expensive side, but they've only got three of them in Scotland, so I get it. But you can't put a price on nostalgia."

After he shared the images of himself outside and his meal, people flocked to share their own memories of the place, and Dazza has a suggestion for the fast food firm, he said: "As soon as I posted it, I've had messages and seen comments from people saying they're going to make the drive to visit it.

"Lots of people were shocked that there are still Wimpys in Scotland. I reckon Wimpy needs to open one in Glasgow. I think they would make a killing and let's be honest. I'd be the first person in the queue."

The brilliantly named burger chain Wimpy first opened in Scotland in the 1960s and offered Scots their first taste of American-style fast food. It was hugely popular until around the early 90s when they began to disappear from our high streets due to competition from the likes of Mcdonald's and Burger King.

It appears though that it still has more than a few fans in Scotland, one person following Dazza's post wrote: "Had one in Dingwall recently it was brilliant, took me back about 30 years."

While another added: "I haven’t been in a wimpy since I was a kid didn’t think they was still going about, think I’ve just found where I’m taking my man out for his birthday."

While others wanted to know if they still served classics like the Bender burger which Dazza was happy to confirm they did.
