I visited Aldi for a plastic-free shop and failed miserably

We've all heard how bad plastic is for the environment and that's where recycling comes in. Globally, however, just 16 per cent of plastic waste is recycled to make new plastics, while 40 per cent is sent to landfill, 25 per cent to incineration and 19 per cent is dumped, according to the BBC.

These figures indicate that we don't need to just recycle, but we need to cut down on the purchasing of plastic all together. But is it really possible to do an affordable food shop that's environmentally friendly too?

I endeavoured to see how far I could go shopping plastic free in one of the UK's most popular and more affordable supermarkets. Aldi has won awards for sustainability in the past, including reducing plastic waste by 600 tonnes in 2020, so it seemed like a natural fit.
