I tried the new McDonald's Steakhouse Stack and honestly wish I hadn't

The new McDonald's menu launched in restaurants today. It sees the return of firm favourites such as mozzarella dippers (including a sharebox) and the Chicken Big Mac, as well as the Cadbury Creme Egg McFlurry just in time for Easter.

But it was the new limited edition Steakhouse Stack that caught my eye. Described on McDonald's website as 'two 100% beef patties, a slice of cheddar cheese, crispy onions, red onions and lettuce topped with a creamy peppercorn sauce, all in a freshly toasted bun,' I thought it sounded pretty good so I decided to give it a whirl.

The sandwich alone set me back £5.49 which I thought was a bit steep (prices will vary across restaurants), and in hindsight I think I'd have been better spending the same amount on a 20 nugget box.

But anyway, presentation wise it was fairly average. It didn't look anywhere near as appetising as the advert - but when do they ever? The red onions were in huge chunks rather than the neat rings shown on the website, the patties to be honest looked as if they'd been launched on with no thought and the lettuce was mostly stalks.

When I picked it up, the majority of the crispy onions were in the box, and half the lettuce fell out.

On first bite, all I could taste was pepper. It was very overwhelming, not like nice creamy peppercorn sauces I've had before. For me it was quite spicy, and the after taste in the back of your throat wasn't hugely pleasant.

The burger patties themselves were dry, and were made only slightly better by the sauce. Bun, cheese and crispy onions were all fairly pleasant.

Overall, it was a pretty underwhelming experience, and at 672 kcal, it did feel like a waste of calories.

For those thinking, 'you get what you pay for', I wouldn't class this as particularly good value at the price I paid. A double cheeseburger would have cost £1.99 and been more enjoyable.
