There was much excitement recently when pictures began circulating of a giant Cadbury Creme Egg dessert being sold by Iceland.
Creme Eggs are a top tier Easter treat it’s fair to say, and I’m sure I wasn’t the only child who dreamed of Cadbury making a giant one filled entirely with that delicious gooey fondant. Well in 2022 that dream has sort of become a reality thanks to Iceland’s dessert. I owed it to my 10-year-old self to try it.
Thankfully I managed to pick one up in my local Iceland but I was quite taken aback by the £6 price tag - though not enough to put me off buying it. The dessert comes frozen and you defrost it for three to four hours in the fridge before tucking in.

When I opened the box it certainly looked like a giant Creme Egg, or half of one at least. The thick chocolate ‘shell’ made a satisfying cracking sound when I hacked into it and my kids squealed with delight at the sight of the gooey orange and white centre. I have to admit it looked pretty good.
But sadly it just didn’t live up to my expectations. The white chocolate mousse had a wobbly, slimy blancmange-esque texture and the orange fondant was incredibly sickly.
There was a sort of chocolate sponge running through the centre as well, which added a bit of texture but just didn’t really taste of anything. The outside shell was made from Cadbury chocolate, but even that failed to give me the kind of huge satisfying hit I get when eating a real Creme Egg.
Overall Iceland’s dessert looks like every kid’s dream come true - and my children were certainly impressed with the sugar overload it provided them - but for me it just didn’t hit the spot I’m afraid.
