St Patrick's Day is just around the corner, which usually means green outfits, bad Irish accents, and as many pints of Guinness as possible.
St Patrick's Day celebrates the saint of Ireland, is held every March 17 as a cultural and religious celebration. It's held on this date as it's believed to be the traditional death date of Saint Patrick.
I've never been a big beer drinker, so I'd always assumed I wouldn't like Guinness. The dark colour put me off, and made me think it would have a strong, overpoweringly hoppy-taste that I'd hate. But to honour St Paddy, I thought it was high time I give Guinness a go, and I was pleasantly surprised.

To start with, I bought a tin of Guinness from Tesco to try at home (actually, I bought four because the Tesco I went to didn't have any single tins). I don't have a pint glass at home - not a big beer drinker, remember? - but I had one big enough to hold almost all the tin.

My main concern was trying to pour it correctly, because even though I've never tried Guinness before, I know people have strong opinions on how much head the pint is supposed to have. Unfortunately, that's where my knowledge ends, so I'm not sure I got right.
After waiting until the pint had settled, I finally took my first sip of Guinness, and it was much better than I thought it would be! The drink was really smooth, and had almost no aftertaste, which I had been worried about disliking.
After a few more tries, I was confident I was a newly converted Guinness fan. But I still had one more drink to try, a proper pint poured from the draught at a pub, which I'd been told would taste completely different.
That evening, I headed to The Fly and Loaf on Hardman street for a pint of Guinness. It did definitely taste different, and had a slightly sharper taste compared to the tin, but it was still the same smooth drink that I'd enjoyed.
I'm still not sure I'll be drinking them regularly, because by the end of my pint I felt quite full, and a little bloated, but I'll definitely be having another on St Patrick's Day.
