Bubble tea is great - but the bubble pizza on offer at a Dublin city centre pizzeria might be even better.
A few years ago there weren’t many bubble tea places in Dublin but today you can find them pretty much everywhere. And one pizzeria near Smithfield has gone as far as to make a boba pizza.
Hungry Boba Pizza is a family owned and run business located in Grangegorman, Dublin 7. They opened in January and while they have some delicious “traditional” food like spice bags, burgers and “normal” pizzas, they also have some pretty experimental stuff like boba pizza, chicken tenders in a bubble waffle, and boba bubble waffle wrap.

We went to check it out and ordered the things that made this place unique. One of the co-owners said only a few people have ordered the boba pizza since the place opened. Naturally, it was the first thing we got.
The man who prepared it said it was his first time making this type of pizza and he had never tried it for himself. He was anxious to get a review and we were all surprised when it turned out it was actually really delicious.
Those who like mixing salty and sweet, such as cheese and fruits or cheese and jam, are definitely going to love this. In order to appreciate the boba pizza, those reluctant to experiment with food need to forget everything they know about pizzas. Without any tomato sauce, it’s just pizza dough, grilled cheese and sweet maple syrup, topped with chewy tapioca pearls that are reminiscent of a sugar-free blueberry jam.
Next, we had the Chicken "N" Bubble Waffle which was crispy chicken tenders and bacon bites drizzled with maple syrup, served on a bubble waffle. The spiciness of the chicken combined with the sweetness of the maple syrup and the delicate hint of sweetness of the waffle made for an intriguing combination of flavours.
For dessert, we tried the Honeydew Boba with blueberry tapioca pearls and - the Boba Bubble Waffle with vanilla ice cream and boba toppings. It was a nice mixture of textures - the waffles crispy on the outside and cloud-like on the inside, combined with the smoothness of the ice cream and the popping boba pearls.
Some boba tea places have tapioca pearls that are not usually cooked well enough and are too chewy, however these were just perfect.
The prices in Hungry Boba Pizzeria are affordable to standard - the 8’’ Boba pizza was just €5.95, while the most expensive thing on the menu were some of the meat-based large pizzas, for €17.95. However, the pizzeria has many deals, including student deals. They also have a loyalty card where every tenth bubble tea is free.
Since Hungry Boba Pizzeria is close to TU Dublin, as well as a student accommodation building, we were told they have many students coming in, especially late at night. Their work hours are ideal for student schedules, as they open at 12pm every day and work until 2:30am Sundays to Tuesdays and until 3:30am during the other days of the week.
Their biggest hits are the pepperoni and margarita pizzas, burgers, crepes and waffles. They recently launched the Easter Egg Bubble Waffle which has a creme egg, mini eggs, whipped cream, vanilla ice cream, sprinkles and chocolate sauce. We were told they make every order in house from scratch, including the pizza dough and the waffle/crepe batter on a daily basis.
