It's officially hot cross bun season and I couldn't be more excited, especially now because there are so many different varieties to try.
Supermarket giant Aldi has launched an array of different hot cross buns, including new Jaffa Cake and Lotus Biscoff flavours. Although I (sadly) haven't been lucky enough to get my hands on the Biscoff flavour at my local Aldi just yet, I did manage to get my hands on the new Jaffa flavour.
Jaffa Cakes are very much like Marmite, you either love or hate the strong orange flavour. Anything orange flavoured is a win for me, which is why I was so excited to dig in.

The new Village Bakery Jaffa Hot Cross Buns are priced at £1.29 for a pack of six, and thankfully, there were still quite a few packs left at my local Aldi in Bromborough. Made with dark chocolate and a tang of orange, the hot cross bun is described as 'perfect with a cuppa' by Aldi themselves.
The look
Aesthetically, as expected, there's nothing too different at all about these hot cross buns to ordinary ones. Raisin haters will be happy to know the Jaffa hot cross bun includes chocolate chunks instead of fruit - which is a big yes from me.
The hot cross bun had a glorious glazed look on the top, and was pretty standard in terms of size. Thankfully the bun wasn't bright orange or anything drastic, and it looked super yummy as all hot cross buns do.
The taste
Now, moving onto the most important part - the taste. I absolutely love hot cross buns, and despite not being a huge fan of the fruit inside, I can put up with it. I was always under the impression that there was nothing better than a classic hot cross bun taste, but I think this Jaffa version has won by a country mile.
The Jaffa hot cross bun was light and fluffy on the inside, and worked a treat with copious amounts of butter. It had that gooey, soft consistency that we all know and love, and was extremely moreish.
In terms of the orange taste, it was subtle, which I was glad about, because I didn't want to bite into anything too overpowering. The dark chocolate chunks in the hot cross bun were (as expected) way nicer than raisins, and added a nice sweet surprise to the bun.
I wouldn't say the hot cross buns were as strong as an actual Jaffa Cake, but to me, that was a good thing. I definitely didn't want anything too sweet and sickly, and this hit the spot perfectly.
The verdict
Let's just say, I'm already planning on visiting Aldi again soon to get some more of these, and to see if I can get the Biscoff ones too. The flavour was delicious, and was a nice change to your usual fruity hot cross bun.
I'd go as far to say I actually preferred this hot cross bun to the classic one, purely because I'm a big lover of anything orange flavoured. I also much preferred the chocolate chunks instead of raisins, because it melted nicely and made the bun even more gooey and delicious.
The consistency was soft, and the hot cross bun wasn't too heavy or sticky. I'll definitely be purchasing these again, that's for sure.
