I tried Aldi's Easter Egg that's a 'dead ringer' for Reese's Pieces but cheaper

Aldi's new peanut butter Easter egg has got me hooked.

Easter is just around the corner and supermarkets and shops are well stocked with a wide variety of chocolate eggs. Whatever your religious beliefs or practices, there's no denying the appeal of the beloved Easter egg.

The hollow, sweet treat is out in force in the run up to Easter, with posh, luxurious brands like Hotel Chocolat and Lindt releasing delectable, decadent creations, while many supermarkets offer budget-friendly dupes to help people enjoy Easter for less.

Famed supermarket giant Aldi is known and loved for its product dupes, often releasing cheap yet no less effective versions of everything from designer skincare and beauty products, to food and household essentials.

Its new Peanut Butter Surprise Egg is a dead ringer for Reese's Milk Chocolate Egg, even down to the peanut butter-stuffed filling. Reese's, which is owned by American confectionary juggernaut The Hershey Company, is renowned for its peanut butter products, with its Peanut Butter Cups well worth the hype.

I'm obsessed with peanut butter, especially when it's combined with chocolate, so a Reese's Easter egg is always on my wish-list in the run-up to the big day. I was keen to try Aldi's version to see whether it measures up.

Like Reese's, Aldi's Dairyfine Peanut Surprise Milk Chocolate Egg, which costs £4.99, is made up of a salted milk chocolate shell complete with chunky peanut pieces. It comes with mini peanut butter eggs hidden inside.

Aesthetically, Reese's looks a little swankier, with the egg usually kitted out in luxe gold foil while Aldi's is bare - though this may well be an environmental decision to help reduce waste. My Aldi egg got a little battered in the box, but it still maintained its shape.

Orange is synonymous with Reese's, so its Easter egg naturally comes in a bright orange box, with Aldi following suit with an orange and green design - but taste is the most important factor.

Aldi's chocolate isn't as rich and creamy as Reese's but that's only if I'm being really fussy and particular. There really isn't that much in it at all, which I was pleasantly surprised by as I'm a Reese's devotee.

Inside, there's a selection of Aldi's peanut butter stuffed eggs - only they're not as generous with the serving of peanut butter as Reese's. Still, they perfectly combine the sweet richness of the chocolate with the salty goodness of the filling. I wish there were more of these inside the egg, though it's probably better for my waistline that there aren't.

Aldi's Dairyfine Peanut Surprise Milk Chocolate Egg is a rich, sweet treat that's a worthy competitor to Reese's. I'd wholeheartedly recommend giving it a try, especially if you want to enjoy the goodness of peanut butter and chocolate on a budget.

Aldi's new Dairyfine Peanut Butter Surprise Egg and Peanut Butter Mini Eggs are available in stores now. You can find your nearest Aldi store here.
