I tried a £3 Twinings 'sleep tea' and it 'worked like magic'

Sleepy teas are all the rage at the moment, designed to make you feel relaxed and calm before you go to bed at night.

Packed with soothing ingredients such as lavender, there’s plenty of different types on offer. I managed to get my hands on the Twinings Superblends Sleep tea, priced at £2.99 from Holland and Barrett.

The tea is described as the ‘perfect wind down partner’ with a gentle orange blossom & lavender with passionflower and valerian taste. It’s advised to leave the teabag in the cup for at least three minutes, before squeezing the teabag to release the flavour in the cup.

As someone that’s struggled with sleep a lot, I’ve tried numerous different products including herbal remedies like Nytol as well as different pillow sprays. I was dubious as to whether this tea would actually work, so thought I’d put it to the test.

The tea

Aesthetically, the tea looked really relaxing, it had a glowy yellow colour and as I poured in the boiling water the steam revealed the strong relaxing scent. I left the teabag in for a few minutes before removing it.

The taste itself didn’t exactly blow me away, but not many flavoured teas do. Considering I’m much more of an English Breakfast with milk girl, this was all very new to me. The sweetness of the orange was subtle and it definitely had a ‘herbal’ vibe to it.

If I had to make a link in terms of taste, I’d say it tasted very similar to green tea. It was quite thin in consistency but refreshing when made with nice hot water. It almost had a menthol tang to it, I could definitely imagine having this tea when feeling unwell.

The general drinking of the tea was soothing, it had a calming taste, but I wouldn’t say it made me drowsy or sleepy instantly. I definitely felt more relaxed though, which is often a given when you’re drinking a cuppa.

Getting to sleep

I actually managed to fall asleep very quickly, which has been rare for me recently, and I truly believe the tea helped me do that. I woke up after a very deep, undisturbed sleep and felt refreshed in the morning.

After being sceptical towards the tea, I actually couldn’t believe it worked! It really calmed and relaxed me after a busy day, and helped me sleep successfully.

The verdict

I genuinely believe this tea was magic, because I’ve tried lots of different things in the past and they’ve never been this successful. I don't know if it was the warmth, its soothing taste, or the calming ingredients, but it definitely worked for me.

For someone that really doesn’t enjoy flavoured teas, I’m going to be using this as part of my nightly routine in the future. With it being World Sleep Day today (Friday March 18), I’ll definitely be celebrating with a nice hot cuppa.
