While I’ve always given spirituality the time of day, I can’t say I’m a diehard believer. Sure, I resonate with my star sign and believe the universe will make sure whatever’s meant for me will find me, but as for psychics and clairvoyants? I raise an eyebrow.
How am I meant to know that what they’re saying is truthful? Or if it’s just a bunch of general assumptions that can be easily tailored to anyone’s lives? I like the idea of a psychic, but have never been able to justify going out of my way to have a session with one. That was until I found myself staring unemployment right in the face.
I was hired as a maternity leave cover, so I knew this was going to be happening at the end of my 12-month contract, but I always pictured having a job lined up and ready to go the second my current role finished. That isn’t the case, and to be frank with you, I’m pretty anxious about it. And as someone who feels the need to take control of their life in any way possible, I decided to give woo woo a go and reached out to psychic Jessica Lynne for a reading.
Lynne is a psychic medium, which means she can speak to spirits of the dead. Usually, people will see these types of psychics to connect with past loved ones they were close to. My issue (but also a blessing)? I’ve only ever had one person in my family pass away: my nonno. It happened when I was six-years-old, so I wasn’t especially close to him, either.
The Reading
As a sceptic, I decided to keep what I told Lynne to a minimum. I mentioned only one family member in my life had passed, but silly little me let it slip that it was my nonno. After sitting in uncomfortable silence for a couple of minutes while Lynne waited for any spirits to reach out to her, she told me there was a man stepping forward for me. She could’ve easily taken my comment and ran with it.
He didn’t want to tell me about himself, he wanted to get straight to business and talk about my career, which I thought was interesting since I hadn’t told Lynne of my employment predicament.
Lynne told me that according to this man, I’m a go-getter, am always on the move, and am going to “have [my] fingers in many pies in this lifetime” rather than stick to one career.
“The universe is going to be moving you around a little bit so you get to have as much experience as possible doing a whole heap of different things,” Lynne said.
TBH, I wanted to grow within the one workplace, but if that’s what the universe has laid out for me, I’ll embrace it, I guess. Apparently, there’s something coming for me very soon.
“It’s like an eight week vibration… You’re going to find a whole different thing that you get to think your teeth into when you get really excited about,” Lynne conveyed from the mysterious man who may or may not have been my nonno (yet to be confirmed). “But I think you’re really going to like it.”

In my regular crash outs about not securing my next big job in media, I’d often turn to my partner and say: should I just give up on being a journalist? I could go back to marketing, or try my hand in PR, or enrol in a course and pivot careers entirely. I didn’t express these concerns to Lynne, but as she acted as a messenger between me and this spirit, she told me not to give up.
“So if you were working in a marketing role for one company or whatever, you’ll be valued within that organisation, but people won’t know about you. So I think he wants to keep you in the eye of the public or people being able to find you and be able to view all the things that you’ve done,” Lynne explained.
As Lynne kept talking, the man finally decided to introduce himself. Some things were quite generic, like how he boasted about being proud of his heritage (which I then had to confirm with Lynne was Italian). It checked out, but it’s also super general, so I wasn’t entirely convinced. Lynne also said that this man wanted to let me know that he was a good man, and that I shouldn’t be scared of him. This kinda confirmed that it was my nonno (but TBH, who else would it be?). I was never close with him when I was little, and always found him to be a tad scary.
But what really confirmed that it was him for me was Lynne saying if I stumble across random coins in the next few weeks, it’s a sign that my nonno was looking out for me and attempting to “fill my pockets”. My dad’s side of the family is extremely passionate about making money, so it gave me a good chuckle.
When I hung up the call, I felt a sense of calm blooming over my chest that I hadn’t experienced in a long time. This spirit, whether it was my nonno, someone else, or some completely made up juju, seemed to think that I’d be perfectly fine despite not knowing where my next pay cheque would be coming from. And I think it was the reassurance I needed that I’ll be okay.
