I Rushed, But It Was Too Late”: Mumtaz Remembers Asha Bhosle’s Final Hours

With a remarkable career spanning over eight decades and a repertoire of more than 12,000 songs, Asha Bhosle redefined versatility in Indian music. From classical and ghazals to cabaret and pop, her voice transcended genres and generations, making her one of the most celebrated playback singers in history.

Veteran actor Mumtaz, who shared a close personal and professional bond with the singer, recalled her final moments with deep emotion. “I rushed when I heard she was hospitalised… I wanted to speak to her, but couldn’t as the doctors informed us she is critical,” she shared. Tragically, shortly after leaving the hospital, Mumtaz received the news of Asha Bhosle’s passing.

The following day, Mumtaz visited the singer’s residence to pay her respects. “When I saw Asha ji, her face had a certain noor,” she said, remembering the serene expression of the departed legend.

The duo had collaborated on several memorable songs, including Koi Shahri Babu from Loafer (1973) and Duniya Mein Logon Ko from Apna Desh (1972). Mumtaz also revealed a lesser-known anecdote: “Ashaji would always tell me that Aaja O Mere Raja was one of the most difficult songs of her career because of the voice variations it demanded.”

Beyond their professional association, their relationship extended into personal life. Mumtaz fondly reminisced about childhood memories spent with Asha Bhosle and her sister, the legendary Lata Mangeshkar. “I remember lying in Ashaji and Lata ji’s lap when they would do riyaz with their tanpura,” she recalled.

She also spoke about a cherished recent memory from Diwali 2023, when she danced with Asha Bhosle at her home. Actor Jackie Shroff had encouraged the moment, though the singer was initially shy. The video from that evening had gone viral, capturing a joyful glimpse of the legend in her later years.

Asha Bhosle’s passing marks the end of an era in Indian music. Her voice, rich with emotion and adaptability, will continue to echo through generations, ensuring that her legacy remains timeless.
