'I regret my baby's name and want to change it - but husband vetoed all my favourites'

A new mum wants to change her daughter's name after her husband vetoed all of her favourite suggestions - and they had to pick a moniker last minute.

The proud parents welcomed a baby girl four months ago, but the mum has regretted their decision ever since leaving the hospital.

Now, she's trying to convince her partner they should formally change the youngster's current title to something she would prefer.

The duo didn't settle on their baby's current name until the last minute, as per the upset mum's post to Reddit.

She explained that they struggled to find a name they both liked and her hubby 'vetoed' all of her favourites.

As the mum's due date neared they drew up a shortlist and 'tentatively chose' a name.

Unfortunately, after her in-laws had an extreme response her husband also changed his mind. "My inlaws reacted so negatively to it that my husband decided to change it but also then decided he disliked all the other names on the shortlist," she wrote.

Following pressure from hospital staff, the parents finally settled on a name before returning home, though neither were enamoured. It was the only name that neither of us hated and liked a bit. As the mum now knows, it was a choice she would come to regret.

The pair named their daughter Sofia - a beautiful name but not the right choice for them. The mum said she admires the 'elegant, feminine' name but that she would prefer something less well-used.

The parent explained: "The popularity almost ruins it for me. We run into other Sophias/Sofias constantly so the name just doesn't feel special enough for my only daughter and to me doesn't suit her."

She added: "We've been calling her Fi and Fia which are cute but our last name starts with Fi as well so it sounds a bit strange. I adore my son's names and I just wanted my daughter to have an equally wonderful name."

Fortunately, commenters were quick to reassure the parent a name change is not a 'terrible' idea, as she feared it might be. When she asked if anyone had gone down a similar route - since her partner is not against the idea but 'worries what other people will think' - they supported the idea.

One person replied: "Omg do it! You need to be happy with her name. She's so tiny and she doesn't know her name yet. Find something you both love (without in law input) and change it so everyone is happy. What about Fiona so her nickname stays the same? You could even move Sofia to her middle name. Make yourselves happy. You're her parents."

A second added: "If you really want to change her name I say do it. Who cares what other people think, it's you and your husband’s child - not anyone else's.

"I'd rather change the name and deal with some 'backlash' for a little while than not change it and regret it her whole life. She's still a baby and doesn't know it, I would do it sooner rather than later but I definitely don't think it's a big deal. People change their minds all the time!"
