I ran a marathon for the first time in my 40s - here's what I wish I'd known as a beginner

If you've been on social media recently, you've likely seen at least someone you know talk about - or even run - a marathon somewhere in the UK. In 2025, the London Marathon broke the record for the largest number of marathon finishers - 56,640. Many of them would have been doing the distance for the first time.

Once upon a time, marathons were only for running obsessives. Nowadays, with so many marathons around the world and the sport more accessible than ever, anyone can do one. All you need is a pair of running shoes and some good training under your belt.
