A salty sausage patty, gooey cheese slice, perfectly round egg all sandwiched between a floury breakfast muffin. McDonald’s certainly know what they’re doing when it comes to serving up a delicious breakfast.
But a sausage and egg McMuffin will set you back £2.79 on it’s own - that’s without making it a meal with a hash brown and a drink.
I thought I could make one even better tasting for a fraction of the cost at home, so headed to Aldi to pick up some ingredients.

My shopping list consisted of toasting muffins, cheese singles, sausage patties and eggs, which totted up to £3.62 in total, which was already less than a pound more than I spend at McDonalds, with ingredients to make four at home.
I used my Drew and Cole breakfast sandwich maker to make my muffins, which features little compartments for toasting buns and cooking eggs.
I shallow fried my pork patties in a pan first to make sure they were properly cooked from frozen. The patties cost £1.59 for six, which is approximately 26p per patty.
Meanwhile, I sliced my muffins and added half to the lower part of the sandwich maker. Four muffins come in at 43p, so just under 11p a muffin.
To the bottom muffin I added a cheese slice, which cost 75p for 15 slices, so 5p per slice. These are always handy to have in for barbecues, especially now the weather is warming up again.

On top of the cheese went my pork patty before lowering the middle plate to keep everything warm. This section is great for cooking eggs in around four to five minutes, with a sliding plate that allows the egg and top bun to then sit on the rest of the DIY McMuffin.
My homemade muffin was much bigger than McDonald’s. I always find the meat to bread ratio is off at McDonalds, but at home, everything was much more even.
Not only this but it was a fifth of the price of my McDonalds muffin - not to mention the petrol it would cost to collect it. Luckily Aldi is much closer to home than the Drive Thru, too.
In total, one homemade sausage and egg muffin cost around 56p, and was far tastier than McDonalds. I know I’ll be treating myself to these on weekends instead of heading to the fast food restaurant.
While you don’t necessarily need a kitchen gadget to make these, the Drew and Cole breakfast sandwich maker did make cooking the eggs a doddle and kept everything warm in the meantime. They’re currently on sale for £39.99 at Amazon here.
