Heist movies are everywhere, so it definitely takes a lot to stand out from the crowd. But when I stumbled across the trailer for Tuner, one of this year's new movies, I was immediately sold on the concept.
The only thing I'm disappointed about is that it's not in theaters until May 29 (although it will see a limited theatrical release in the US starting May 22), but good things come to those who wait. In the meantime, I'd check out the most exciting new movies of 2026 to keep you entertained until then.
As a brief summary, Tuner follows a gifted young piano tuner with a heightened sense of hearing. As it happens, he's just as good at opening safes as he is tuning Steinways, which soon gets the attention of criminals. Due to his unconventional skill, he abandons his once promising musical career for a much more dangerous profession.
After watching the trailer, I think this has the potential to be one of the best movies of the year.
Tuner's trailer struck a chord with me
Tuner is off to a promising start. Early reviews from critics have given it a 97% Rotten Tomatoes rating at the time of writing, which aligns with my initial response to the trailer.
The movie approaches the heist genre through a fresh lens, focusing in on sound as a primary sense. From my initial understanding, the piano tuner character, played by Leo Woodall, blends into the background doing an often thankless job. That changes when he's able to use his skills as an essential part of a criminal operation.
The trailer for the movie teased that he's joined by his mentor, played by Dustin Hoffman, and a composition student who he "forges an unexpected connection" with, so I'm excited to watch the various dynamics unfold.
I'm always enamored by unlikely characters that are thrust into dangerous worlds, with no criminal backgrounds at all. While that trope is hardly uncommon, Tuner is offering up a take on it I've never seen before.
On top of this, I loved Leo Woodall as Jack inThe White Lotus season 2, so I'm keen to see his performance here.
This could be a huge hit for Oscar-winning director Daniel Roher, who is best known for his work on the documentary movie, Navalny, about the Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny.
We'll have to see what happens when it gets a wide release later this year, but I've got high hopes for this one.
