Sleeping in the basement, struggling to eat and keeping an eye on the news 24 hours a day. That is the “new reality” for many Ukrainians, according to one student living just outside of the capital Kyiv.
Liza Chernobay, 19, spent the last six years studying at a school in Gloucestershire in England but was living with her parents in central Kyiv when the Russian invasion began. Now they have moved outside of the city to stay with friends, where they are continuing to “monitor the situation” before deciding what to do next.
“At the moment to travel is probably more dangerous than to stay where you are,” she told the PA news agency. “If things will start to get worse… but it’s just, the word ‘worse’ – what is good and what is bad is quite relative at the moment. Everything seems quite horrible.”
