Bristol Rovers secured promotion back to League One in unbelievable circumstances with a seven-goal victory over Scunthorpe United.
Thousands of Gasheads poured onto the pitch at full time, lofting their heroes in blue and white into the air after a truly remarkable performance to pip Northampton Town to automatic promotion on goals scored.
Rovers were 2-0 up at half time courtesy of an own goal from Oliver Lobley and a close-range header from Connor Taylor. Both Antony Evans and Aaron Collins then netted second half braces before Elliot Anderson powered home a header for Rovers’ seventh goal of the game, prompting bedlam in BS7.
After the game Bristol Live spoke to Gasheads celebrating on the pitch to get their thoughts on an unbelievable day...
Mark ‘Woody’, Sally and Kelsey
"I think I’ve probably checked the league table five or six times already just to make sure because it’s the most unbelievable thing I’ve ever seen. By goals scored... it’s unreal, absolutely unreal. Completely bonkers.
"At no point did I think that we were going up until we scored the sixth. When we scored the sixth and there was 10 minutes to go, I thought actually perhaps we can do this.
"The worst thing was watching the score at the Barrow-Northampton game, and realising we then had to score two more. But then on the other side of that, if Barrow get one then we’ll have done it anyway. It was just adrenaline. Up and down all game. It still feels unreal.
"Joey has already proved that he’s got the contacts to bring in very good players for the level we’re at and I think he’ll be able to do that in League One as well.
"I think we’ll definitely be competitive. I’m not going to say we’ll go straight up or anything like that but he’ll bring in players to make us competitive, I’ve got no doubt.
"Importantly it means we might be able to keep players like Antony Evans and Sam Nicholson and the players who are out of contract and that’s a big thing as well
"I think we’ll finish in the top half next season."
Harry Sloggott
"I genuinely can’t believe it. After going down last season, it had been a tough year. If you asked me at Christmas if I’d have taken play-offs I would have said yes. So, to get this, is unbelievable. I’m getting on it tonight. I cannot believe it.
"It depends if we can keep Evans and Nicholson and Taylor and Elliot Anderson, I doubt we’ll keep Anderson, but if we can manage to keep any of them, I could see us challenging in the top half, but I’d be happy with mid-table. We need to grow steadily perhaps like how Luton Town have done over the last few years."
Andy and Marcus Fulterer
"Even at 2-0 and at half time I said to the guy next to me this season deserves an end like something you wouldn’t expect and that’s what we got. It was just incredible. Amazing for Elliot to finish it as well.
"I can’t believe it. I wasn’t here for the Lee Brown moment so that makes up for it. It was written in the stars with that ending.
"Hopefully this means we can sign a few people like Antony Evans and maybe Luke Thomas and James Connolly, that would be good.
"There was at least two division between those teams, perhaps as many as four. So you can see the potential of this group. If we needed eight we would have got eight, you could just tell we were going to score as many as we needed to.
