'I’m not having that' - Michael Owen names five reasons for Liverpool problems and sends message to critics

Michael Owen believes there are 'so many reasons' as to why Liverpool have been shockingly out of form so far this season.

The Reds take on Napoli at Anfield in their final group stage game of the Champions League with qualification for both sides already secured from Group A as Owen spoke of Liverpool's troubles pre-match.

Liverpool have hit a worrying trend of falling behind in matches, but the former striker has backed Jurgen Klopp to turn the Reds' fortunes around.

Leeds added to Liverpool's woes on Saturday night after winning 2-1 at Anfield to make it two defeats in a row for the Reds in the Premier League.

Ex-Reds striker Owen said on BT Sport: "A couple of big mistakes, there’s never one reason why. It’s football, it’s a team game, there’s so many areas that Liverpool are falling short at the moment and Liverpool have always played where it’s all or nothing and when it’s on they’re impossible to play.

"At Anfield, we saw it against Barcelona - would’ve we love that tonight - when it’s on, the great teams can’t cope with them. But when it’s just off, they don’t play in a style of play where they can revert back to safety so at the moment, it’s just not working.

"I’ve seen so many reasons, Mane leaving, the midfield, lack of pressing, confidence, mistakes and they’re all relevant. But there’s not just one and that’s a problem. If you keep going behind in games, I don’t care who you are, you won’t get much out of the season.

"The form has been erratic in many ways this season, there’s so many subplots, they’re through. Not much to play for unless they’ve beat Napoli and beat them well, they’ve already been battered in Naples so they’ll want to put that right. There’s a big game at the weekend against Tottenham as well so they’ll be thinking about that."

Owen is 'very confident' Klopp will turn Liverpool's fortunes around, just as he did in 2020 when playing behind closed doors did not favour the Reds.

"I’m very confident [he can turn things round]. Liverpool went on a rancid run in the COVID-hit season, they couldn’t win a game for half a dozen, getting beat all the time it seemed," Owen added." This isn’t a season where they’re losing all the time, they’ve battered Bournemouth, Rangers, beat Manchester City.

"They’re showing signs they’re still the team of old, just inconsistent. I definitely see them coming back, the experts saying it’s the end of a cycle, I’m not having that at all. What players are at the end of the cycle? Milner, he’s played as good as he has done in years. Henderson is getting on, okay, but playing well himself.

"All of the rest of them, the ageing players, Van Dijk, Fabinho are still brilliant, Salah, they’ll be brilliant for a few years. I don’t think it is the end of the cycle."
