Liverpool is blessed with many fantastic independent food places - and now one of them is up for a prestigious award.
Bonbon Bakery has delighted Scousers with its range of sweet and savoury treats since it opened in 2013. I’d heard so much about the family run business on Berry Street but had never made the time to visit.
However, with the news that it was in the running for Best Bakery of the Year after becoming the best in the North West, I had to give it a go. Its delightful arrangement of baked goods behind glass cases was a great first impression. Customers have to take a tray and select the items themselves, before taking them to the counter.

I went for a Cha Siu Bun, which contains pork covered in Chinese barbeque sauce, and a Rice Ball. There was also a large range of sweet treats to go with my savoury choices. I opted for the Melon Cake and Walnut Biscuit.
Bonbon’s small size meant that sitting inside wasn't an option, so I had to settle with tucking in on the benches located on the corner of Duke Street and Great George Street. However, this didn’t take away from the quality of the food.
The Cha Siu Bun was delicious, with the pork, sauce and bread complimenting each other perfectly. I’m not surprised it’s one of the shop’s best sellers.
I wasn’t a fan of the Rice Ball, which was dry and bland in my opinion. I’d go for something different if I visited again, such as a Red Bean Bun.
Thankfully, the Melon Cake was a fantastic sweet treat, despite it closely resembling a meat pastry on the outside. Another bonus was the huge Walnut Biscuit, which offered a crispy taste and was very filling.
These four items came to a total of £7.90, a good price considering the amount and range of food I selected. Furthermore, its location in Chinatown is a perfect addition to the community’s proud range of beloved food outlets.
I’m disappointed that I hadn’t visited Bonbon sooner. But with it having a chance of clinching a prestigious award, there’s no better time to sample what this delightful Chinese bakery has to offer.
