It seems like nearly every major car brand has shifted its focus to electric vehicles (EVs) right now. And while the choices keep expanding, not every EV delivers the reliability or performance drivers want or expect.
“In the car market, I would go with the lower-cost and trim-level Teslas,” said Chris Pyle, an auto expert with JustAnswer. “They have the EV figured out and make a very high-quality car. I do not need all the bells and whistles, but most come with a lot as standard equipment. The cost is in line with comparable gas cars; they are nice-looking, the interior is laid out well, very dependable and resells well.”
According to car experts, these are the only EVs they’d consider purchasing in 2026.
Tesla Model X Plaid
- MSRP: $91,990 to $106,880
“The Model X Plaid is a blast to drive, thanks to its impressive power and handling,” said Melanie Musson, auto industry expert with AutoInsurance.org. “When you drive one, it somehow feels like your grandparents’ luxury Cadillac combined with your friend’s Corvette.”
When looking at EVs, Musson said that she always considers their range, safety technology and charging network. “Their charging network is the best, so even if I wanted to travel across the country, I could,” she added.
Tesla’s app is another plus. “The app allows you to view at a glance all the pertinent information about your vehicle and charging,” Musson said.

Tesla Model Y
- MSRP: $46,630 to $61,630
Dan O’Hare, manager at Cox Motor Parts, recommends the Tesla Model Y.
“The range and Supercharger network make it one of the most practical EVs for real-world driving,” O’Hare said. “It’s roomy enough for families yet still quick and responsive, and Tesla’s tech features — like over-the-air updates and advanced driver assistance — keep it feeling current long after you buy it.”
According to MotorTrend, Tesla revamped the Model Y earlier this year and improved many of the EV’s shortcomings. Ed Loh, head of editorial, also called it the “gold standard for American EVs.”
Ford F150 Lightning
- MSRP: $56,975 to $87,190
Besides Tesla, Pyle would consider the Ford F-150 Lightning.
“In the truck market, I would go with the Ford F-150. It can do all things a truck owner needs, as long as you are not towing over 5000 pounds. Beyond that, the battery cannot hold up,” Pyle said. “Not everyone tows and hauls often. So, the F150 EV is a good fit. They are doing pretty good on dependability, and they come with a plug that can power your home for a short while.”
