I'm A Celebrity... Wales divided over Matt Hancock in the jungle

One of the big talking points this week has been Matt Hancock joining the cast of I'm A Celebrity Get Me Out Of Here! It's fair to say he's been a divisive addition to the hit ITV TV show.

The former health secretary is still a serving MP. However, it appears lots of Wales Online readers support Mr Hancock - with many warmly welcoming his appearance in the Australian jungle.

Campmate Boy George - who, like many other people, wasn't allowed to visit his mum in hospital during the pandemic - said if his mum had died he "would have gone when he [Mr Hancock] walked in" to the jungle.

Many hundreds of people have commented on our recent Facebook posts about the issue. And a quick trawl through them gives a snapshot of how people in Wales feel about Mr Hancock and his role during the Covid-19 pandemic - which ended in disgrace and his resignation, after he was photographed in a clinch with his lover.

Tanya Thomas commented: "I sat by people's bedsides during covid when they passed, I had family in hospital and couldn't be with my loved ones, I lost dear friends and had my own health issues. Do I blame Hancock? No, good luck to him . Only man along with Sean worth watching."

Mark Evans wrote: "I can't believe the narrow minded blaming Matt Hancock. He only took advice from the experts on what to do to keep safe, try blaming them. And yes I do feel sorry for people who lost someone."

Mag Dallimore wrote: "I haven’t got much time for Matt Hancock as a politician but he DID NOT cause the pandemic. Nobody knew for sure how to deal with it! He is not a medical expert! He made mistakes like everybody else did during those hard times and tough decisions had to be made! But you cannot put all the blame on him ! Everybody makes mistake, so stop being so hypocritical and give the bloke a chance to show himself as Matt Hancock the human being!"

Paul Wilson commented: "It’s not Hancock's fault Covid caused so much disruption. If no restrictions were put in place it would have been even worse.

"It was my health authority that stopped me going into the hospital during my wife’s cancer treatment for our protection which thankfully meant a full recovery with no Covid complications. That’s what they were doing for BG's mum. He should be grateful everything turned out ok and he still has his mum, too many weren’t so lucky."

A very effusive Dan Morgan gushed: "Matt Hancock is a fantastic addition to the show. He is also a great leader, one day I would love him to become PM, he did a great job during COVID under extremely difficult circumstances."

But not all our readers are on Matt Hancock's side - with some backing Boy George. Anita Thomas commented: "I'm with Boy George on this I lost my husband to Covid under horrendous circumstances.

Anita's comment gained support from Julia Wills, who replied: "Anita Thomas- me too. How gullible are people. Before he went in most people hated him.

"Now he's gone in and smiled a bit everyone's like he's lovely. What did they expect? He's a politician.

"That's what they do - pretend to be nice. Remember everyone - he was in the broom cupboard kissing someone while telling us we were going to get fined if we went out of the house too much."

To people asking why Mr Hancock was being blamed for Covid or lockdowns, Jude Brigley commented: "People are blaming him because we all stuck to the rules watching or not watching our loved ones die while he was caught snogging his fancy woman or did you forget? He was part of a government that partied and did what they wanted.

"I was in this situation. My dad was taken into hospital on his own and died on his own. I hope Matt gets picked for all the trials."

And Ian Carter wrote: "Matt Hancock should not be in there. My partner had a heart attack, survived it, had operation - I could not visit, communication was awful. Total isolation and not knowing what was going on.

"For him to say all is ok now because Rishi is fine... no. He should be doing his job not in there getting £400K... I feel for families who lost people in hospital due to covid."
