'I love my baby's unique name - but some say it sounds like a Stranger Things monster'

If you want to choose a unique name for your baby, you might find that it's not as easy to come up with something unusual as it first seems, especially if you're also trying to avoid it being a name that people end up poking fun at when your baby gets older. And while you have the final say in your little one's name, it's sometimes not a bad idea to get a second opinion.

One mum has found out firsthand that asking for help can be a good thing when it comes to baby names after she shared her top choice with people online and discovered that most people weren't keen on it. In fact, the mum shared three potential baby names and received mixed feedback on all three.

In a post on Mumsnet, she said: "Terancia. What do you think of this name for a baby girl? Other names also on my list are Milencia and Astoria.

"They're all quite unique names and all end in an 'ia' sound which I love. If anyone has any similar suggestions please let me know."

Comments on the post were split between the three names, with many saying that while they weren't the sort of names they would choose, they also could be a lot worse.

However, in the case of Terancia, many people were unimpressed - as the name was compared to Terrance, as well as tarantulas, a thrush cream, and even a Stranger Things monster.

One person said: "To me, not having heard it before, it sounds somewhere between Terrence and Tarantula. So it doesn’t have an appealing first impression, but I'm sure I'd get used to it."

While another added: "Sounds like a cream for thrush."

And a third took issue with all three names, stating: "Terancia sounds like a monster from Stranger Things. Astoria sounds like a hotel. Milencia sounds like an ancient insect that will be in the next Jurassic Park. Please, please don't."

Not everyone was against the names though, as some said they liked the name Astoria - even if it did remind others of the London music venue, a hotel, or a nightclub.

Someone said: "No, [Terancia] doesn't sound nice. Astoria is quite nice, but sounds like a hotel."

As someone else wrote: "Astoria is lovely, and you can call her Story for short."
