'I know how it can be' - Virgil van Dijk sounds Liverpool warning and dismisses 'shock' claim

Virgil van Dijk admits Liverpool are unhappy with their indifferent away form as he warned the Reds face a "difficult" Champions League evening in Amsterdam.

The Reds take on Ajax on Wednesday evening aiming to earn the point that will secure progress to the knockout stages with a game to spare.

Liverpool 's 7-1 victory at Rangers a fortnight ago remains their only away win this season, with Saturday's 1-0 loss at Nottingham Forest meaning they have failed to win any of their opening five Premier League away games for the first time in 16 years.

And Van Dijk said: "That's obviously not something we like and it's something we want to improve as a group. We will try to show the intensity that we always want to show from tomorrow on again. We need that.

"Every game, whether home or away, is a difficult task and a different ask from us, we want to improve the results and it starts tomorrow. We want to show tomorrow that we are Liverpool, one of the biggest teams and clubs in the world."

Van Dijk added: "I don't think there's time for shock within ourselves (at the away form). Everyone can look in the mirror and know if they are doing something well or not as good as they normally do. The only way to get this going again and get that level again that we all know that we can have is to play games. We need everyone with that. We need all the players, we need obviously fit players, we need the fans and we need to grind out results as well in order to get momentum.

"That's what we showed against Manchester City and West Ham but against Nottingham it was ourselves to blame. We should have buried that game, we didn't. Fair play to them they won it, and we move on. When you are in a moment when we are trying to get there again, these results could definitely give you a bigger hit than before, but we are focused on tomorrow."

Wednesday will be Liverpool's first competitive game at the Johan Cruiyff ArenA with the Champions League group game at Ajax two years ago played behind closed doors due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Holland captain Van Dijk was part of the Celtic side that lost at the stadium in the competition in 2013 and was also beaten there in the Eredivisie while with Groningen.

More than 55,000 fans are expected, and the centre-back added: "This is a difficult stadium to play in. Ajax is a fantastic club historically with the philosophy, the way they play and also the players (they have had). They don't have also the best moment (at present), but I know how it can be here on a Champions League night when things go well for them. That's something we are prepared for.

"We have to match the intensity at least and go for even more. It will be interesting tomorrow, it will be nice and something we should look forward to. But we shouldn't forget how good we are ourselves and keep our confidence and try to be consistent as well."
