Now that Sony's getting rid of physical discs in come 2028, a warning is apparently being stuck onto new PlayStation 5 consoles. The label foretells of games only being available by digital means, and existing discs will remain fully functional.
On Twitter, YouTuber Behind the Games posted about the tag, using an image and information that comes from a third party. "From January 2028, newly released games on PlayStation game releases will be available for purchase on PlayStation Store and at retailers in digital format only," the sticker reads.
"Discs for games released before January 2028 can continue to be played on this console," ends the disclaimer. As you may have guessed, this comes on the disc PS5 machines.
Behind the Games has since posted this isn't their purchase, but comes from a trusted source. There's some skepticism around the legitimacy here, because the black box-out doesn't line up properly with the surrounding imagery, but this is likely down to it being a new addition that assembly workers are manually sticking onto every PS5 that's getting ready for shipment.
They mention they're going to post further proof, but this is already distinctly plausible. Sony will want to give consumers as much runway as possible for when discs stop being available to them, especially for those who are buying consoles that take physical games.
People are no less unhappy about the prospect, either. "I hope PS6 will be a disaster for Sony," says one Twitter user. "This is so nasty. PlayStation will never see me again," another posted.
This probably protects the corporation from legal fallout too, in case anyone buys a disc-based console only to realize they can't buy any new disc-based games for it. The odds weren't strong that Sony would reconsider this move, and this only compounds the fact that the corporation's decision will be lasting.
