Choosing a moniker for your newborn is one of the hardest decisions parents have to make, as you want to ensure that your little one's name matches their personality and character. Many parents also want a name that feels unique and special, but nothing too out there as kids can be mean about names at school.
One mum-to-be thought she'd nailed it when she came across a baby name for her little girl that she loves, but others have warned her against it as they've argued it has 'sleazy connotations'. Other mums have conceded that it could work as a nickname at a push, but they've brazenly slammed it as a full first name.
Taking to the popular forum site Mumsnet for advice, the parent, who remains anonymous, wrote: "What are your thoughts on the name Gigi for a girl?
"And if it were to be a nickname which more traditional names could be used as a full name?"
People were quick to share their thoughts on the seemingly inoffensive moniker, and it's undoubtedly left the mum feeling confused on whether to plump for the name after all.
One bold Mumsnet user wrote: "Sorry no, it's too often used as a name for prostitutes or strippers on TV etc. just too associated with sleeze [sic]".
While another added: "Reminds me of the musical and creepy Maurice Chevalier singing Thank Heaven for Little Girls.
"I'm not usually a stickler for longer formal names but Gigi seems a bit too showgirlish to be the official name. Georgina would seem to lend itself well to the Gigi nickname."
Another commenter offered a different opinion on the controversial name, as she wrote: "I know a Gigi, short for Genevieve. Love it".
Plenty of other parents suggested that the mum-to-be should opt for a different full name that she can still abbreviate to Gigi, as they believe it's more of a nickname than a full moniker.
One Mumsnet user explained: "Personally I don't love it as full name, but could work for any name beginning with G. Georgia/ Georgina/ Georgiana and Giselle from my list seem like Gigi would work best with Gigi, though Gaia is my favourite G name.
"I'd make sure if you use Gigi as a diminutive that you really like the full name too, as if she ditches Gigi, you're not left with a name you didn't really like in the first place."
The mum-to-be has yet to respond to the flurry of opinions on her post, but it's safe to say she's been offered plenty of options to explore.
