Maria Romanenko

I fled 1,200km from my home in Ukraine. I hope that Boris Johnson follows Poland’s example

I woke up in the outskirts of Kyiv to my British boyfriend telling me that we needed to get out of Ukraine. The entire country— east, west, south, and north — was being subjected to airstrikes by Russia. It was horrific.

The events of the next 72 hours will be engraved in my memory forever. We drove on very slow roads with hour-long queues for petrol to finally reach western Ukraine 10 hours later (a journey that normally takes half that time). After sleeping in Lviv for a couple of hours, we set course for the Polishborder at 4am on Thursday.
