I explored the south side of Barbados to trace my family’s heritage

Angelina Villa-Clarke and her family at Animal Flower Cave in Barbados - (Angelina Villa-Clarke)

The night air is hazy with BBQ smoke and I can feel the bass of the dancehall music in my rib cage. It’s Friday night in Barbados and there’s only one place to be: Oistins Fish Fry, on the southern tip of the island.

I’m away with my family: my husband and two boys, who are 19 and 24. We’ve been to the island in the past, but not since my sons were small. While my husband was born in London, both his parents are from the island and this time around we’re all curious to discover more about these roots.
