'I don’t think that’s going to happen': Muller move unlikely despite recent links

Newcastle United are unlikely to sign Bayern Munich attacking midfielder Thomas Muller upon the expiration of his contract.

That is according to BILD journalist Christian Falk, who claims while the Magpies and Everton are both interested in Muller, neither are likely destinations.

Muller is out of contract at the Allianz Arena in 18 months’ time but there have reportedly been no discussions as of yet to extend his current deal.

The Bundesliga champions, though, are planning on initiating talks in the coming weeks with the 32-year-old, who has been at Bayern Munich for the entirety of his professional career.

And while there is interest from elsewhere for the player with six goals and 18 assists in 20 league matches this season, journalist Falk is not expecting him to make the move to St. James’ Park anytime soon.

Via the Bayern Insider Podcast, he said: “The contract situation with Thomas (Muller) will probably be with us for the next few days, probably weeks.

“You read it, I reported it; Everton and Newcastle are already getting their hopes up.

“I don’t think that’s going to happen, but of course, other clubs are now paying attention to Thomas, so Bayern should get a move on.”

Newcastle have been linked with a whole host of big names since the completion of their takeover last year and spent almost £100 million last month, in what was their first transfer window under new ownership.

The Magpies brought in the likes of Bruno Guimaraes and Kieran Trippier and although they are considerable coups for Eddie Howe’s side, players of Muller’s calibre may just be a step too far at present.
