I cut £400 off my EDF bill by switching off quiet 'guzzler'

As new renters trying to get to grips with household bills me and my partner looked up all the hacks to save money. Turning off standby appliances, running the washing machine during off-peak hours and even turning the thermostat down by one degree.

But our direct debit payments continued to go up. It's safe to say our energy bill has caused us both a fair amount of stress, not only the thought of the consistent rising costs, but the added pressure of trying to figure out why we were overspending.

We are on a standard variable tariff with EDF and pay via direct debit, so we expected fluctuating prices given the circumstances, but up until recently our monthly bill for two people exceeded the average amount for a family of four, and we couldn't understand why.
