McDonald’s have been on a streak of reimagining their products by adding a little bit of spice. Recently we have seen old faithful's removed from their menu to make way for the Spicy Big Tasty, Spicy McChicken burger and the spicy chicken nuggets which have all been released to polarising reception.
One of the most recent tongue tingling items is the limited edition Mega Hot Sauce. On their website, McDonald’s proclaims that ‘it lives up to it’s name’ with a blend of crushed red pepper and jalapenos.

To see just how true that statement is, we decided to test how spicy the dip is when compared to other hot sauces on the market. To be fair, we chose two sauces on both ends of the Scoville scale to test just how spicy McDonald’s new sauce gets.
One on side, is the ever delicious Sriracha Hot Chilli sauce which definitely has a kick but is equal parts delicious with it’s signature smokey flavour. On the other end of the spectrum we had Tropical Sun’s tear inducing Carolina Reaper Hot Sauce which I can only describe as death in a bottle.
The thinking is, that if the Mega Hot Sauce was as hot as advertised then it should be able to fall somewhere in between these two sauces being just as delicious as it is spicy during a blind test.
The verdict
Unfortunately, the Mega Hot Sauce was the weakest out of the three, in fact, it wasn’t even the tastiest. During a blind test where I dipped my crispy McDonald’s fries into dollops of the sauces, the Mega Hot Sauce was the most underwhelming, failing to register any sort of emotion or reaction out of me outside of a shrug.
There was indeed a ‘kick’ but it wasn’t anything to write home about, and the most distinguishing thing about the dip was its taste which was really just McDonald’s own salsa sauce with a very minimal kick.
The tastiest hot sauce was undoubtedly the sriracha sauce which had reasonable amount of spice that you felt in the back of your throat. Naturally, that leaves one winner when it came to heat and that was Tropical Sun’s Carolina Reaper Hot Sauce.
Carolina Reaper is the hottest pepper in the world, and with this sauce, Tropical Sun have concocted a product that is more of a punishment than a delicatessen. However, despite it being almost impossible to eat with, it can be done, although I am yet to find the right blend so will be sticking to my sriracha sauce for the foreseeable future.
