‘I can’t believe what I received’: California tenant receives email about rent change from landlord, contents leave everyone blindsided

Any renter who receives an email from their landlord will feel a sudden cold chill of dread. In almost every conceivable situation, this is going to be extremely bad news. Likely options are a rent hike, a note that you’re somehow behind on payments, or, simply, that you’re being evicted and must pack your bags.

Such was the situation with Adam, a poster on X who lives in Fremont, California, who got an ominous email from his landlord. He opened it, doubtless expecting the worst. We can only imagine his reaction when he read it, and then re-read it to make sure he wasn’t hallucinating:

“Hi Adam!

There will be a letter being mailed out on Monday but wanted to provide it to you via email as well because I’ll be out of town for the next week. Your rent has been decreased. Instead of $1,317 moving forward it will now be $876.

With the rent adjustments made since your move-in, you’ve been credited $10,939.07 that will be in your ledger. When I get back, we need to meet so that you can sign an addendum reflecting your new rent amount. Let me know if you have any questions.”

So, does Adam have the only good landlord in the nation? Why on Earth would he be credited over $10k?!

The going theory is that this is because this renter is in income-based/subsidized affordable housing, where rent is usually set at about 30% of the tenant’s adjusted household income. If income changes, landlords are required to adjust rent and recalculate retroactively, so the landlord must credit the tenant for months where they overpaid at the higher rate.

The one good landlord

Even so, posters theorize that this is the one landlord “with a moral compass”, though Adam explains he’s got a corporate landlord, and that it’s far more likely this is a legal requirement to avoid being sued:

But, whatever the reason, this is obviously a red-letter day for Adam. He goes on to describe this news as “life-changing” and that tonight he’s going to celebrate:

Naturally is isn’t the norm for landlord behavior. Most of the time, landlords are determined to squeeze every penny they can out of their tenants while providing a minimal service, all the while their mortgages are paid off by the renter’s blood, sweat, and tears.

It seems like even if someone begins renting property with the best of intentions, they will eventually be corrupted into the kind of landlord who grumbles at their tenants’ demands to get rid of black mold or to return a deposit without any drama at the end of a tenancy.

But, at least in this one case, Everything is peachy. Not only does Adam have a cool $10k credit with his landlord that’ll mean he won’t have to pay rent for around a year, but when he does, it’ll be substantially reduced! Maybe it’s time to move to Fremont…
