I am a sucker for a seventies look and when I saw this floral dress in Sainsbury’s hanging beneath a big red reduced sign, how could I refuse? This week Sainsbury’s launched a huge in store and online sale offering 20 per cent off womenswear - including new in.
The Retro Floral Square Neck Dress had been tempting me during my regular supermarket trips for weeks as I pondered whether I’d wear it to a family barbecue or a theatre trip.
So when I spotted it was marked down from £24 to just £19.20 , I considered it fate as I’d only nipped in to pick up some kettle descaling sachets, and they were out of stock.

I even managed to get it slightly cheaper, using £7.50 worth of my Nectar points, meaning I only really paid £11.70.
The dress comes in a muted pink, mustard and orange colourway reminiscent of your grandmother's curtains, which is pretty much exclusively what my wardrobe consists of - retro patterns and vintage finds.
Summer-ready and stylish, the midi dress features on-trend puff sleeves with elastic cuffs, and a shirred back one could only wish to be talented enough to sew myself, or I’d be making similar dresses in every colour because the fit is stunning.
The pure cotton dress is lined for extra structure and opacity, nipping in above the waist before floating downwards. Available online, the piece comes in sizes eight to 22, with a petite version in sizes four to 18.
Shoppers have swooned over the 70s piece almost as much as me, with one writing: “Bought for a 70s party, fabric was perfect! True to size.and good quality.”
“Lovely dress, perfect length. Really pleased with it,” said another.

A third shopper rated the dress five stars, commenting: “Great dress. The fabric is a soft light woven cotton. Good midi length. Fab print and colours.” While another saw it in a magazine and just had to have it’.
My favourite part of the dress is the bodice - the square neckline and puff sleeve combo provide a modern twist on the vintage-inspired piece. The length is flattering and lends itself nicely to a white trainer or a heeled boot, which is my preferred way to wear it.
The summer number needs minimal accessories,
TU Clothing at Sainsbury’s said: “You've just found your perfect summer dress. In a 70s retro-style flower print, this vibrant maxi features a square neck, short puff sleeves and has pretty shirring to the back for comfort and fit. It will look a dream with our ochre fisherman espadrille sandals.”
