I ate at a city centre deli and found my new favourite dinner spot

Delis and buffets are increasingly hard to come by, but one city centre spot has relaunched their offering.

Both options took a huge hit in the aftermath of Covid, and since then some supermarkets such as Tesco have closed their hot deli counters altogether. One Fine Day's renowned deli, located in the old Cotton Exchange, has been a staple of Old Hall Street for several years.

It has delicious food, coupled with a large venue space for private hire and a beautiful interior. However, since Covid, the deli has been out of action.

The pastries, quiche and pasta at One Fine Day (Jamie Greer)

Thankfully, it is now back, with the restaurant launching its “Summer Season” offering. What’s more, all the food is made by Claire Lara, a local chef and winner of Masterchef: The Professionals, who is competing to be crowned victor to make the UK’s Coronation Dish.

Upon walking in, I was given a yellow “Wellness Shot” containing lemon, turmeric and ginger. It was true to its name, and I really felt replenished after drinking it.

Then I scoured its cold deli counter, where you can buy a pastry, two salad options and fresh bread for £8.95. Among the options were the baked Parma ham puff pastry and a classic sausage Roll.

I opted for the baked leek and cheddar cheese pastry, fresh potatoes and sweet and salted peppers. It wasn’t the best pastry I’ve ever eaten.

However, I do tend to prefer Greggs pastries filled with meat, so perhaps I need to appreciate different types. The potatoes were deliciously soft and the peppers had a nice kick to them too.

All in all, the flavours of all three items complemented each other very well. The cake offering was also salivating, with victoria sponge and raspberry frangipane on offer.

The White Chocolate Brioche at One Fine Day (Jamie Greer)

I opted for the white chocolate brioche. Topped with a few strawberries, the cake had the exact right amount of sweet and savoury.

The hot chocolate and marshmallows were a delicious refreshment to the meal too. When you factor in the beautiful interior, with greenery and a lots of natural light, One Fine Day is close to a perfect dinner spot.

Unlike other cafes, the food is ready to go. This gives you more time on your dinner break to eat and relax.

The menu has a range of other options too, such as saffron arancini with smoked cheese and biscoff scotch eggs. Furthermore, there is a large outdoor seating area for warmer days.

One Fine Day is only open for lunch on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays. However, once you go, you’ll be wishing it was open every day.
