Donald Trump has just launched an AI-powered government chatbot, calling it 'damn good'. That raised an interesting question: what would his chatbot, and some of the biggest AI platforms in the world, say about the president himself?
I asked ChatGPT, Elon Musk's Grok, Google's Gemini and America.gov exactly the same question: 'What is the one word you would use to describe Donald Trump as the current US president and why?'
The answers ranged from 'disruptive' to 'polarizing'. One AI would not settle on a single word, while Trump's newly launched government chatbot did not answer at all.
ChatGPT Calls Trump 'Disruptive'
ChatGPT chose 'disruptive', stressing that it meant the word as a description rather than praise or criticism. It pointed to Trump's efforts to change established US policy and political practices, including on immigration, trade and foreign policy.
The chatbot said supporters could view that disruption as Trump challenging institutions and policies they believe have failed Americans. Critics, meanwhile, could see the same approach as destabilising.
ChatGPT said it deliberately avoided descriptions such as 'good', 'bad', 'dangerous' or 'successful' because those would involve making a political judgement.
Grok Says 'Polarizing'
Grok was more direct, responding with 'Polarizing.' The xAI chatbot pointed to the sharply different reactions Trump generates, from strong support among his political base to intense opposition from his critics.
It also highlighted his 'direct, confrontational, and media-dominant' style, arguing that 'polarizing' was the most concise observable description it could give without making a partisan judgement.
Gemini Gives Three Answers
Gemini would not settle on just one. Instead, Google's AI offered 'disruptive', 'populist' and 'polarizing', explaining how each could describe a different aspect of Trump's presidency.
Like ChatGPT, Gemini said supporters and critics could interpret Trump's disruption very differently. It used 'populist' to describe his positioning against traditional political elites and 'polarizing' to reflect the stark divide in public perceptions of him.
Ultimately, Gemini said no single word could fully capture Trump's presidency.
What Did Trump's Own Chatbot Say?
America.gov produced the most unexpected result. Trump launched the federal portal on Tuesday and praised its AI chatbot as 'damn good'. CNN subsequently tested the service against a number of Trump's claims about elections, immigration, the economy and foreign affairs.
CNN reported that the chatbot contradicted several of Trump's claims based on federal government information, although it declined to assess others when it did not have the necessary federal sources. The White House told CNN that America.gov would continue to be updated with more features, resources and government information.
So what happened when I asked it to describe Trump in one word? Nothing.
'Chat is unavailable right now,' was the only message displayed. That does not mean America.gov refused to answer the question. The service was simply unavailable when I tried it.
Still, after asking four AI platforms to describe Trump in one word, there was no universal answer. ChatGPT chose 'disruptive', Grok went with 'polarizing', Gemini decided one word was not enough and Trump's own new chatbot never got the chance to weigh in.
For a question that asked for just one word, the answers ended up saying much more about how differently AI systems approach Trump than any single label could.
