I Am Legend 2 is officially in the works and has now landed a director. Creed 2 and Transformers: Rise of the Beasts helmer Steven Caple Jr. is attached to the movie and it's apparently in development.
While details on what will happen in the sequel are thin on the ground, we know it will pick up in the wake of the first film's alternate ending. This saw Dr. Robert Neville realize that he may be the monster after all, rather than the Darkseeker population. He chose to give them back the zombie he'd been researching on and left in search of more survivors.
