Hyundai suspend Chelsea sponsorship in latest crushing blow to club's finances

Car manufacturing giants Hyundai have become the latest company to suspend their association with Chelsea following the news that Roman Abramovich had been sanctioned by the UK Government.

Abramovich has seen his assets frozen due to his links with Russian president Vladimir Putin in the wake of the invasion of Ukraine.

Shirt sponsors Three have already confirmed they had ended their links with immediate effect, with Hyundai now following suit.

Korean carmaker Hyundai agreed a five-year deal to be the club's shirt sleeve sponsor in 2018, but have now confirmed they have suspended marketing and communication activities with the club.

The statement reads: "In the current circumstances, we have taken the decision to suspend our marketing and communication activities with the Club until further notice."

On Thursday, just hours after news of action against Abramovich, 55, had been confirmed, mobile phone provider Three confirmed they were suspending their relationship with the Premier League giants.

“In light of the government’s recently announced sanctions, we have requested Chelsea Football Club temporarily suspend our sponsorship of the club, including the removal of our brand from shirts and around the stadium until further notice," a statement released.

Hyundai's decision in the latest in a long line of crushing blows, with the London club forced to operate under a special licence in order to fulfil their Premier League fixtures.

The measures, introduced along with Abramovich's sanctions mean the club have a very narrow window in which to operate in, with the purpose of ensuring the club's owner can make no profit from their running.

On Saturday morning, the Premier League also confirmed that the Russian billionaire has been disqualified as a director of the club.

A Premier League statement read: "Following the imposition of sanctions by the UK Government, the Premier League Board has disqualified Roman Abramovich as a Director of Chelsea Football Club.

"The Board’s decision does not impact on the club’s ability to train and play its fixtures, as set out under the terms of a licence issued by the Government which expires on 31 May 2022."

Abramovich is hoping to sell the club and had announced his intentions to part ways with Chelsea, after 19 years at the helm.

The sanctions have made a sale more difficult, although the Government have confirmed they are still hoping to force through a sale in a way which would see Abramovich make no profit from it.

"We need to hold to account those who have enabled the Putin regime," a Government spokesman said in response to the Premier League. "We are open to a sale of the club and would consider an application for a licence to allow that to happen."
