Hurricane Isaías Ties a 121-Year Record — And It's About to Slam Pensacola as a Category 2 Storm

PENSACOLA, FLORIDA- OCTOBER 08: Aaron Chi and Wilner Garcia place plywood over the windows of a home as they prepare for the possible arrival of Hurricane Isaias on October 08, 2026 in Pensacola, Florida. Hurricane Isaias is in the Gulf of Mexico as the season's first Atlantic hurricane, with sustained winds of 80 to 85 mph. It is projected to make landfall along the northern U.S. Gulf Coast as a category two or lower hurricane by late Friday or early Saturday. (Credit: Photo by Joe Raedle/Getty Images)

The Briefing:

  • Hurricane Isaías strengthened to Category 2 on Thursday afternoon with sustained 100 mph winds, making it the first hurricane of the 2026 Atlantic season and tying a more-than-century-old pre-satellite record for the latest-forming first hurricane in Atlantic history.
  • The National Hurricane Center places the most likely landfall zone along the Gulf Coast from coastal Mississippi through the western Florida Panhandle, with the storm expected to arrive late Friday night or early Saturday morning — carrying storm surge up to 7 feet and 3 to 7 or more inches of rain near the impact zone.
  • Florida and Alabama have declared states of emergency; Escambia County has issued evacuation orders for Zones A and B along the coast; and Pensacola International Airport will shut down Friday morning, sealing off one of the last available exit options for residents who have not yet left.
