Hurricane Helene Weakens To Category 2, Still Poses Threat

The latest update from the National Hurricane Center (NHC) at 1 a.m. ET reveals that Hurricane Helene has weakened to a Category 2 storm with sustained winds of 110 mph. The storm is currently located 10 miles southwest of Valdosta and is moving rapidly northeast at 26 mph.

Despite the downgrade in intensity, Hurricane Helene continues to pose a significant threat, particularly to southern Georgia. The NHC has issued a warning stating that the storm is producing catastrophic winds in the region.

The NHC emphasized the extreme danger of the situation, urging individuals to remain in their shelters and not venture outside until the storm has passed. Even when the eye of the storm passes overhead, it is crucial to stay indoors as hazardous winds can quickly resume.

Reports from southern Lowndes County in Georgia indicate wind gusts of up to 88 mph. Additionally, a USGS tide gauge at Steinhatchee, Florida recorded a water level 9.6 feet above mean higher high water, suggesting inundation in the area despite the storm no longer being directly over land.
