Hunter mining giant holds town hall meeting about future

One of the Hunter's largest coalmining companies will hold an emergency meeting with its workforce on Tuesday morning.

Yancoal told staff on Monday it would hold the town hall meeting in Singleton for its Ashton coal mine workforce on Tuesday, however workers were not told about the specific nature of the announcement.

The Ashton underground mine is one of the oldest mines in NSW, but it's understood it has experienced a number of geological issues along its longwall in recent years, including water seeping in from nearby land.

The meeting is scheduled for 8am at Civic Centre, with some Ashton mine workers sent home early on Monday to ensure they could attend it with the required 10-hour break between shifts.

Located 15 kilometres northwest of Singleton along the New England Highway, the mine employs about 300 people and produces about 2.5 million tonnes of coal a year.

Yancoal was approached for comment, however the company did not respond to the Newcastle Herald's questions.
