In a recent court filing, federal prosecutors have accused Hunter Biden of agreeing to lobby US officials on behalf of a Romanian businessman facing criminal investigations in Romania. The allegations were made by special counsel David Weiss, who is prosecuting Hunter Biden for alleged tax evasion. The trial is set to begin in September and involves Hunter Biden's controversial foreign business dealings.
While prosecutors have not charged Hunter Biden with foreign lobbying crimes, they intend to introduce new testimony about the alleged lobbying agreement as evidence in the tax case. According to Weiss, Hunter Biden agreed to influence US public policy by lobbying agencies and officials to investigate improprieties in the Romanian government's case against a wealthy businessman known as G.P.
The filing also mentions that Hunter Biden reached out to US government officials, including those at the State Department, but details of these communications were not provided. Prosecutors claim that one of Hunter Biden's business partners is prepared to testify that they concealed the true nature of their lobbying work to avoid political ramifications for Joe Biden.
However, prosecutors clarified that the witness did not accuse Hunter Biden of engaging in improper political influence. While House Republicans have previously scrutinized payments made to Hunter Biden by a Romanian business associate, prosecutors have not supported claims of corrupt foreign business deals involving Joe Biden or abuse of government powers.
Prosecutors stated that they do not intend to reference allegations of Foreign Agents Registration Act violations or improper coordination with the Obama Administration. Hunter Biden, who has pleaded not guilty to the tax charges, denies engaging in undisclosed lobbying for foreign clients. The trial is scheduled to commence on September 5 in Los Angeles, with sentencing in a separate criminal case set for November.
