Hunt begins for Dumfries and Galloway's Coronation Champions

The hunt is on for Dumfries and Galloway’s Coronation Champions.

To mark May 6’s coronation of King Charles III, the awards scheme aims to celebrate and recognise volunteers who have made an exceptional difference in their communities.

Her Majesty, The Queen Consort is a long-standing advocate of volunteering, and the Royal Voluntary Service is organising the awards to acknowledge the contributions of volunteers across the UK.

There are eight award categories, with judges especially keen to celebrate rising stars as young Coronation champions.

The awards will close on April 2, with 500 Coronation Champions announced ahead of the Coronation weekend of May 6 to 8. Nominations can be made at www.royalvoluntaryservice.org.uk/coronation-champions-awards.

Other events for the Coronation weekend include The Coronation Big Lunch, with neighbours invited to share friendship, food and fun. See www.coronationbiglunch.com for details.

And on Monday, 8 May, there will be the Big Help Out, aiming to highlight and encourage people to take part in the benefits volunteering has on communities. Further details are available at https://thebighelpout.org.uk

Lord Lieutenant for the Stewartry, The Lord Sinclair, said: “I can think of no better way for us all to celebrate the coronation, than by recognising our many unsung volunteers, and by bringing together the communities in our region for a Big Lunch – I’d encourage everyone to get involved!”

The council has set up a section of its web page full of information about details and arrangements for the coronation weekend.

Civic head, Councillor Malcolm Johnstone, said: “We know that communities across Dumfries and Galloway are using this occasion to come together to celebrate the Coronation – the first for 70 years – with street parties, lunches and decorations; and to support the themes of reducing isolation, sharing food and supporting those most in need.”

“Our council is pleased to be able to support communities as they put their plans in place. We have agreed that Monday, May 8 will be a council holiday, and our elected members and staff will play their part in enabling our citizens to enjoy their weekend programme safely and positively.

“As the first council in Scotland to achieve Investing in Volunteering accreditation, The Big Help Out on Monday, May 8 is strongly supported and is a great opportunity for our citizens to support each other.”
