Hundreds of homes without electricity following power cut

Hundreds of homes have been left without electricity this morning following a power cut in Oldham.

Around 200 properties in the postcode of OL8 are thought to be affected by the issue, according to Electricity North West. It's understood the power cut has been caused by an "unexpected" incident with underground cables.

Teams are currently on their way to the area to fix the issue, which isn't due to be resolved until around 17.48pm this evening. In a post on Twitter, Electricity North West said the problem was what they called a 'Transient Fault.'

"We are aware that there is an ongoing issue in OL8. This is what we call a Transient fault. If you need further help or updates please DM us," they said.

On the Electricity North West website, the operator confirmed the area was experiencing a power cut, and assured customers they were investigating the issue.

"This power cut has been caused by an unexpected incident with the underground cable that provides electricity to your home or business," they said.

"We didn't know before your electricity went off that this was going to happen but now we know, rest assured we will get your power back on safely and as quickly as possible.

"Please note that all our time scales are estimated based on previous experience and may change if new information becomes available while our engineers are fixing the issue.

"With underground power cut’s, we may need to dig to repair the cable and this can sometime extend the length of time you are without power."
