Hundreds of fake Rangers and Celtic tops seized as Old Firm strips among UK's most ripped off

Celtic and Rangers strips are among the most ripped off in the UK.

Hundreds of Old Firm jerseys were seized from fraudsters trying to bring them into the country, it can be revealed.

The figures come from the first study of counterfeit kit seized by UK Border Force agents at ports in 2021.

It said 253 Celtic tops and 248 Rangers tops were found by officers. They are made overseas – just like the real thing – but sometimes in sweatshop factories.

The figures, revealed under freedom of information (FOI) laws, saw Premier League side Everton listed as the most popular.

They were placed above Manchester United and Liverpool.

Full-price home shirts for Celtic and Rangers are £65 but the fake shirts can be half that price.

Last year Rangers set up a task force for “brand protection” and urged their supporters to report anyone selling unofficial merchandise.

A statement said it was “damaging the club’s brand” and threatened court action on repeat offenders.

The National Fraud Intelligence Bureau said: “Buying a counterfeit shirt will save you money in the short-term but the reality is you are likely to be buying a poor product that will quickly start to show signs of wear.

“At the same time you could be putting money into the pocket of organised crime and helping fund their wider operations.

“Stay well away from the stalls and websites pushing fake replica shirts.”
