Humberside Police raid three funeral directors out of 'concern for deceased'

Humberside Police have raided three funeral businesses in East Yorkshire in response to a “concern for the care of the deceased”.

The force has cordoned off three branches of Legacy Independent Funeral Directors in Hull and the East Riding area as officers investigate on site.

Police took a call on Wednesday and were seen on site putting tape around the funeral homes as staff work to find out the details and circumstances.

Detective chief superintendent Simon Gawthorpe said: “Whilst we are in the very early stages of our investigation, I completely understand this information will be of concern to a number of families and individuals who have lost loved ones and have utilised the services of this business.

“We have already been in contact with a number of people as part of our investigation and are working closely with His Majesty's Coroner, Hull City Council and East Riding Council to establish the facts.”

Cordons are at Legacy Independent Funeral Services on Hessle Road and Anlaby Road in Hull, and Beckside in Beverley.

At this stage, police do not believe these to be connected to any other branches of Legacy Funeral Directors. The force has asked everyone to refrain from speculation.

DCS Gawthorpe said a direct telephone line has been established to help victims and encouraged anyone who is worried or has information to get in contact.

He added: “As we continue our enquiries to understand the precise nature of what may have occurred and if any criminal offences have taken place, I would please ask people to be respectful and refrain from speculation.

“At the core of this investigation will potentially be heartbroken and devastated families and loved ones and we want to provide them with the consideration and support they need and are fully entitled to.”

Legacy Independent Funeral Directors has been approached for a comment.
