Human remains have been discovered at a unit complex at Alderley, in Brisbane's northern suburbs.
Police say the remains were found by cleaners under the complex on Alderley Avenue about 10:45am today.
Detective Superintendent Andrew Massingham said the cleaners, who were contracted to clean the area underneath the unit, discovered the body in a locked void area behind a brick wall.
"Examination of that area located an item that we, at this stage, have identified by preliminary examination as being human remains," he said.
Detective Superintendent Massingham said the body was tightly wrapped and covered in multiple layers of clothing and bedding and appeared to have been there for "some months".
"The person has taken great care to wrap the body up in a certain way and preserve it," he said.
"They've also transported it to an area that's not really accessible, and whether it was their intention to leave it there or come and get it at some later time and simply haven't is part of what we'll be looking at."
Investigations are underway to determine the person's identity and cause of death, and a crime scene has been established.
Detective Superintendent Massingham said residents of the unit were unaware and had not reported any bad smells, which he said was likely due to the way the body was wrapped.
"What is quite concerning, obviously, is that these remains have been here for some time," he said.
"There was no noticeable smell or any other indications that were suspicious to these people."
Police are interviewing residents of the complex, and are appealing to people who may have previously lived at the unit block to come forward with any information.
An investigation centre has been set up at the Hendra police station.
The body will remain at the unit tonight while forensic officers continue to work at the scene.
Detective Superintendent Massingham said investigators were going through dozens of missing persons reports but said it would take some time to identify who this person is and their cause of death.
