Hugo Lloris makes Antonio Conte admission after Spurs win mental battle in Marseille

Hugo Lloris admitted they put Antonio Conte through torture before their last gasp victory.

Tottenham midfielder Pierre-Emile Højbjerg scored the winner with the last kick of the game as Conte’s men won their Champions League Group and qualified for the knock-out stages.

But it was a night of high drama and an almighty let-off for Conte who was serving a one-game touchline ban and endured the tension of seeing his side having to fight back after going a goal down.

Tottenham captain Lloris said: “It's a great result without a coach, it was probably even more difficult for him in the crowd. It was a great battle. I think it was even more of a psychological battle because we could feel there was a team playing without fear.

“In the second half we faced a team that had the fear to lose, because they were 1-0 up and one goal could stop them going through.”

France defender Clement Lenglet scored a second half leveller after Chancel Mbemba put Marseille ahead and Tottenham survived an almighty scare as substitute Sead Kolasinac missed a sitter in the dying stages to win it before Højbjerg’s last gasp clincher.

Lloris added: “We expected that type of game we know the Velodrome is a very difficult place to deal with, and i think we showed great personality in the second half.

“Clement scored a very important goal in France in front of the French people, it's important and he helped the team to get back on track and then the second goal from Pierre is just so important to confirm the first spot in the group.”

Lenglet added: “We didn't play well in the first half because we didn't know if we had to attack or defend. After the first half we spoke in the locker room and we said what we had to say then we started the second half with a lot of power, much more power and much more aggression.”

Tottenham’s preparations were ruined after Marseille’s ultras let off fireworks outside the Spurs’ team hotel twice in the early hours the night before the game.

They also face an anxious wait to discover the severity of injury to Heung-min Son after he went off in the first half with a serious looking head injury.

Tottenham assistant Cristian Stellini added: “Antonio must have been tired just watching that. Maybe he spent more energy in the stands than on the touchline.”
